Cornered: Considerations for Corner Fireplaces

We occasionally have inquiries about corner fireplaces, from people who are challenged by a small space or an awkward layout.   Often, they talk themselves out of their corner unit and they make space for a flat wall mantel and fireplace.   But sometimes, a corner really is the best position for a fireplace.  Here are the ‘angles’ to be considered when it comes to a corner fireplace:
Will the fireplace be visible from the entire room when it’s placed in the corner?   In an L-shaped room, as in the basement shown here, the corner is the only position which can be viewed from all parts of the space.   In a rectangular room, the corner fireplace may be an ambient feature, adjacent to the seating area, or a focal point across from the seating area.  Neither is wrong, unless you plan to place the TV above the fireplace, in which case, it obviously needs to be visible from the seating area.

Stone Corner Fireplaces.

Stone corner fireplaces are truly the cornerstones of a room. Whether the stones are round or flat, В smooth or coarse, В or a combination of varying sizes, shapes and textures. a stone corner hearth has a commanding -- and cozy -- presence!

Pictured below is the living room of "Brookside," a romantic country cottage overlooking Lake Michigan. Designed by SALA Architects, with offices in Stillwater and Minneapolis, Minnesota, this charming getaway retreat is anchored by a rugged stone hearth. Rising from floor to ceiling, it features a striking arrangement of natural boulders and rounded stones in a variety of sizes. A massive stone lintel carries much of the weight overhead. It is supported by a large stone slab to the right of the firebox opening and a series of stacked stones on the left which, in turn, rest on a raised stone hearth -- also supported by boulders beneath it.
A definite attention grabber, this striking stone pile extends to an adjoining outdoor patio. В В As shown below, the stonework wraps around the outside corner of the building to include a second firebox and chimney flue!

How to Decorate a Living Room With a Corner Fireplace

Wall Color

Applying a wall color to contrast the color of a corner fireplace helps to make the fireplace stand out and command attention. For example, painting walls a crisp white against a slate-gray fireplace creates pleasing visual contrast with a modern appeal. You can also use a wall color to complement a fireplace's existing colors. For example, enhance the earthy tones in a natural stone fireplace by painting the walls a color drawn from the rocks, such as creamy caramel, soft gold, vanilla white or light brown. Create an accent wall above a corner fireplace -- a corner fireplace commonly has a wall above the fireplace at an angle between the two walls -- with a hue two or three shades darker or lighter than an existing wall color.

Focal Points

Determine what you want your room’s main focal point to be. The two main points that people choose are the fireplace or the television. Think about what point you want your room to center around and what point you use most. Fireplaces naturally draw attention, but you might use the television more and select this to be your focal point. Choosing your focal point will help you design the room because it’s the area you will arrange your main pieces of furniture around.

Place a coffee table in front of the sofa and armchairs. If there’s not enough room to include a coffee table inside the seating area, place a long table behind the sofa to keep lights or a telephone on. Decorate the coffee table with photos or keep a book on it for people to read.
